It can be hard to navigate the legions of designers at a given fashion festival. So Tragic’s put together a creative short list to help you manoeuvre this week’s Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week . Get your binoculars out, here are our ones to watch…
This lady is top of the ‘one to watch’ list. Why? She’s 18. The designer begged notice when she went to Dubai on an Australian trade show (with her father, a one time costume designer for the Russian ballet) and placed $450,000 worth of orders. Not bad eh? Despite her age, Jacqui’s designs aren’t ageist. Flowing fabric, high waist skirts and snug jackets comprise a heady part of her first collection.

Mix vomit with fashion and what do you get? Something like Material Boy’s last collection – a hyper coloured ode to regurgitation. Designer (and former pro-surfer) Mic Eaton’s androgynous leggings create tight silhouettes under oversized hoodies and tees. Is spew in style? We’ll let you know after his MMSFW parade.

Sydney boy Ben Pollitt has made monochrome minimalism the uniform of inner city hipsters. His soft cardigans, cheque shirts and layered hoods in black, black and well, black reference classic old world craftsman – in a tragically cool style.

Like many a good designer, Kate started out spruiking her wares at Sydney markets. But demand for her one-off dresses soon translated into a label. Even though she’s branched into pants, tops and skirts. Dresses are still Kate’s forte. Her latest collection is inspired by ‘90s songstress Sade, and pits metallic jackets over iconic ‘little grey dresses’.
